¿Do you imagine surfing on a board shaped by surf legends? This is the absolutely bizarre festival organized by Vans where 4 professionals surfers, Dane Reynolds, Nathan Fletcher, Wade Goodall and Alex Knost work together with the Vans surf team to create mind-blowing surfboards on the Duct Tape Festival.
Watch great surfers ride their own surfboards in the North Shore of Oahu, you’ll be tripping to see the Vans surfing team crapping the hell out of the wonderful Haleiwa waves, it might give you a thought or two on the art of creating surfboards. An ode to surfing craftsmen that is totally off the hook, the surfers got to try the boards at the Haleiwa Beach Park this winter, surfing legend Dane Reynolds said on the matter:
“When I first started shaping it was just completely novelty silly like I would just make boards without using templates or making any measurements or anything like that, it was super fun, but I just started getting more into trying to like learn the craft cutting on my own.”
So pro-surfers are encouraging everyone around to get into this fine craft, most of them began with this initiative, Dane Reynolds said it was his first time doing it and he watched many videos online to get the idea of how to do it. Wade Goodall spoke of the fact of making the boards ideal for Haleiwa:
“It’s kind of more exciting to try to shape aboard for Haleiwa because it’s actually a really fun wave for a lot of different types of equipment, when you JP something for Hawaii it’s a little more daunting because like you gonna maybe surf it in big waves and never shaping a hand shape before shaping a big wave boat, it’s like if I get smoked it’s my own fault but I think that’s kind of the beauty of it too, like I’m hacking the crap out of it but learning”
Nathan Fletcher, a more experienced surfer with a few years ahead in the art of creating surfboards was the official spokesmen of this exciting event, he summarized the costs of the whole experience, letting you know how to start the crafting process:
“I actually encourage everyone here to go to Home Depot buy a planer that are like $60, get a shithouse second blank for 50 bucks and wing it because once you do that and you go right it puts everything into perspective, if you could surf great and you could design a board and you could execute what you imagined in your head
and what you want, I mean it’s the most primal thing in it and it can’t be replicated tonight. I can’t stress to everyone here to go make their own fucking surfboard”
So surf legends are pretty serious about it, seems like shaping a surfboard is the new thing when it comes to surfing trends, so if you are brave enough give it a try ¿who knows? You might shape the board of your dreams.
