During these days all the surfers and surf lovers are watching for sure the Quicksilver Pro Gold Coast 2018, one of the most important and famous event linked to surf world. This event takes place at Snapper Rocks, Australia and will be held from 11th March to 22 March. It is also the opening event of the Samsung Men’s Championship tour conducted all around the world. Today there was a big challenge between the hawaiian surfer John John Florence and the australian surfer Mikey Wright.
Before to discuss about what happened today in this event, let’s talk a little bit about these two great surfers.


John John Florence was born in Honolulu in 1992 and many people say that he is one of the most dominant Pipe surfers of his era and last year to confirm his reputation, he won the title of 2017 World Surf League Men’s Champion. Thanks to this win he is considered the best surfer in the world. He is also the first hawaiian champion after Andy Irons that won the world champion title three times during his life.
John learned to surf thanks to his mother Alexandra. She was a surfer too and introduced him in this world. Also the fact that he grew up in Hawaii, one of the surfer’s paradises helped him to learn really fast and to become a talented surfer. At the age of 13 he was the youngest surfer ever to compete in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, an event held in Hawaii where the partecipants have to do three big wave surfing contests.
From 2011 to 2012 there was a huge progress in John John’s career since in 2011 he has ranked 34th and in the next year 4th. In 2016 he was for the first time the WSL Champion. Along with the mentioned wins, John has also other records, for example in 2011 and in 2013 he won the Vans World Cup of Surfing becoming the youngest contestant to do this.

The world champion opponent, Mikey Wright, was born in 1996 in Culburra, Australia. He started to compete in 2012 so he is a new face in the surf world but he is really determinated to fight and find his spot along with other big names. As for John John Florence, Mikey Wright also was raised in a surfing family. His brother Owen and his sister Tyler are professional surfers and above all Tyler made a serious success in her career so Mikey wright doesn’t want to be the black sheep of his family.

The results of the second round of the first heat were unexpected because Mikey Wright eliminated the x2 world champion John John Florence. Mikey made history because it was the first elimination of a reigning world’s champ in a season opener round 2 after 2 decades. Thanks to the defeat of John John, now Mikey is the number one on the WSL Qualifying Series (QS). During the event he was supported by his sister his brother and above all by his dog that is Mikey’s number one fan as himself stated and it seems that his dog brought him luck.
