American Dipper Diving under Stream Ice in early December

The streams in the Juneau area are mostly frozen now but area with faster moving water are still open. The American Dipper is still using the open water to dive for insects. Temperatures are in the 10-12 degree F range but don’t seem to have any impact on the dippers foraging.
